Divide Et Impera (DEI) - Part II
A short history of Monotheism as envisioned during heavenly afterlife.
Hi there again.
I, your self-proclaimed spiritual leader and visionary (a)historian Titus Flavius Vespasianus, return with an apology for the durex royal mindfuck. Two millennia in heavenly isolation gave me a lot of time to reflect on past mistakes that shaped human history and thought. I believe I have overcome my aspirations of grandeur and I’m ready to make amends, if you’re ready enough to pay attention. I won’t tire you with everything. But I’ll try to help the (un)meek(ed) inherit the earth. Trust me, the heavens are boring, especially for control freaks like many of you (and former mortal me).
My visions start over 2500 years ago with the Medes creating the idea of one god, one state, one king. A brilliant idea if you’re that king. You can pretend to be a paragon of virtue and force obedience on others, even those more virtuous than yourself; which should be almost everyone if you’re a powerful one. Works better than pesky chaotic polytheism and don’t get a ruler started on the unbelievers; nerdy mercenaries and other useful idiots excluded.
The Persians soon took over from the Medes, conquered the Babylons and sent some Judean captives back to now Persian Judea, followed by the idea of the one and only true God. Then Plato was a major asshole in Athens (and Sicily and Thrace).1 Then the Macedons conquered the Persians before civil warring into smaller large courts. The sister loving pharaonic Ptolemies became the gods of Egypt and proxy war and grain and bureaucracy, and the masters of Judea.
Later the Seleucids, the other big post-Macedons (and kings of “Asia”), stole Judea from one Ptolemy pharaoh (who was still too young to have a co-goddess sister queen to save his ass2). But my Roman ancestors were drawing near. Their NATO-style alliance defeated and kept proxy warring the Seleucids in largely (and intentionally) obscured ways, and then Judea broke “free” under enhanced nationalistic monotheism and priest kings.
Rome eventually got too big and occupied the Pharaohs, the Greco-Macedons, the Judeans and all former Roman allies among too many others. Started looking at the god-king (and one-god) thing to better master over all those varied captives. But the Judeans already had single god mindset and many of them had become too stubborn at that. By now I was born, raised and went with daddy general Flavius Vespasian to beat the contemporary Judean revolt.
Dad had big connections and was soon back in Rome to become the new Imperator. I was left to reconquer Judea. And so did I; strong and brutal and soon much richer through plunder. Did I mention that daddy’s friends and then minions, Roman patrician bureaucrats, post-GrecoPharaohnic scribes and GrecoJudean aristocrats alike, were brilliant(ly evil)?
I was to become the model for the new Messiah, the Christ, the Chosen one. His holy journey was to mirror my military campaign. The rebel was to became the traitor and the master to became the lord and savior of the meek. To give Caesar what is Caesar’s. Pushed the whole thing a few decades back in time for prophetic verification wow effect. And so I (or my alter ego) predicted my conquest of Jerusalem before I was born.3 We even kept promoting the much more moderate Seleucids of two centuries ago as the Judean arch rivals.
This Flavian Christianity was our new Imperial cult. Dad was god, son was messiah. The masses to be pacified and extorted more efficiently. Many Popes and saints and Josephus were Gens Flavians, adopted or pureblood or fictional. Then dad died, I died, bro died. BTW we also gave you the Colosseum.4 Then other houses ruled the empire, but Flavianism was still spreading.
The Judeans kept revolting, Imperials kept beating them and kept purging their old and upcoming militant faith branches. Millions butchered on both sides in wars for over 100 years. The rebels especially genocided Cyprus and much of Cyrenaica. Rome genocided many of the rebels and we Flavians blamed their arson in Rome on both Nero and ourselves (Christians), to confuse everyone and make us look like the victims of Nero and polytheism. Stories involving lions, rebels and circuses got similar treatment.
Flavianism fully (re)took control with Flavius Valerius Constantine “the Great” and soon after started to dominate or genocide everyone in its path. Most every Flavian temple hides a pagan one. Every naive small folk or petty power center attempt at a less oppressive Flavianism was purged as evil heresy. Too many crimes, but let’s not put all of the blame on me. I just killed people in a military campaign and finished dad’s Colosseum and liked being called the Messiah. Dad once claimed it all was his own idea, but I think it must have been some nerd in Alexandria. Makes me feel better this way.
Meanwhile the Persians had reemerged under the Sassanids with improved, more brutal monotheism than before, almost to match our own. While fighting them and Christened barbarians and outsider pagans, the empire shrinked. The Arabs emerged against the Persians, I think we secretly monotheismed them to grant them war fervor, but my visions there are too hazy; is it possible that they finally caught up with the trends a bit too late? They also turned against us and this helped give rise to a stronger Pope. The empire further splintered. North Christened (and some Judaized) barbarian nobles and merchant princes and holy orders and reformers and secret societies inspired by ancient mystery cults emerged or expanded. Fought for the hearts and minds of humanity and the power status of holding the real truth.

The outcome of this messy yet largely mind-controlled later roman world is today. (Ever more high tech) plots have forced the various (at the top non-)cults all over the world to shadow merge under who knows who. Visions are getting hazy again yet even most seculars think and act like cultists too. Almost everyone is living in Plato’s (digitized) cave and blaming shadows on the wall, just as he intended for the masses.
Every major top-down crime is denied / and presented with clear evidence / and blamed on various different actors or cults / and justified (as a platonic noble lie) at the same time. DEI perfected.
Soon only the leaders of the (global feudal platonic) state will be able to lie. That shall become universally established as working for the greater common good and soon irreversible. Unless you grow up fast and stop believing in organized (spiritual and secular) fairytales.
Love,
JC, aka Titus Flavius Vespasianus
Besides bringing up or perpetuating several terrible ideas, Plato was making friends with tyrants in hopes of gaining a cityful of people to experiment on. His pupil Dion, with Plato’s blessings, staged a mercenary-coup-invasion of Syracuse. Two of Plato’s pupils assasinated the Odrysian king Cotys I, but Oxford tells us not to think conspiracy despite the Athenians honoring the two killers.
Actually many Ptolemies, male and female, were absorbed in luxury, hedonism and further inbreeding, while courtiers ruled Egypt.
This post is majorly influenced by Joseph Atwill’s “Caesar’s Messiah”. Makes more sense the more I look into it. You can also check this and this.
I like your first person style ;-)
